The Esoteric Microbiology Technologist Trainee will aid in identification of microorganisms such as Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB), fungi, and others through a variety of methods including: special stains, antigen detection, DNA probes, culture reading, PCR, Sequencing, MALD-TOF, and others. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, assisting customer service and specimen management, and problem solving to ensure accurate results and compliance.
The Esoteric Microbiology Department is one of the largest laboratories of its type in the United States. We perform a variety of bacterial, fungal, and mycobacterial cultures, antigen detection assays, molecular assays, and susceptibility testing for yeast and mycobacteria using manual and semi-automated methods.
The schedule for this position will be: 2nd shift, Monday-Friday, 2:00pm-10:30pm, with rotating Saturdays, every 3rd. This position is also eligible for a 10% shift differential due to 2nd shift hours.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prep, evaluate specimens.
- Understand the correlation with type of specimen with specific plate source for needed growth.
- Know the basic techniques to inoculating plates.
- Understand common terminology for microbiology.
- Be able to identify yeast, bacteria, and mold.
- Adhere to SOP and GLP.
- Prepare laboratory reagents and standard solutions according to SOP.
- Evaluate raw and final data for accuracy; recognize and correct errors and unusual results; interpret result to produce a final report.
- Maintain, calibrate and disinfect instrumentation; perform scheduled/routine preventative maintenance checks; troubleshoot as indicated.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology
- Previous experience is not required at the Technologist Trainee level
- Must be able to work Independently as well as teamwork effort; multitasking is essential
- Must be able to perform work with a high volume and repetition
- Manual testing from plates; visual testing and hand and wrist repetition of preparing and analysis of plates is critical
